Beijing motor show: Maybach 57 62 facelift

Daimler has unwrapped today the facelifted versions for the Maybach line-up. The very refreshed versions of the Maybach 57 and the Maybach 62 were unveiled at the Beijing Motor Show.

The facelifted Maybach 57 and 62 are still powered by the 542 horsepower engine that is now a bit more fuel efficient as it returns an average of 18.8 to 17.7 mpg with CO2 emission levels of 350g/383g per Km.

The exterior chances include a new chrome radiator grille, a new front bumper and redesigned hood, re-styled side mirrors and new rear light clusters and new new-look 21-spoke, 19-inch wheels for the standard models and get 12-spoke, 20-inch wheels for the S ones. Also the 57S and 62S models are 11 mm longer and 17 mm wider.

The interiors feature hand-braided or crystal-encrusted seat piping, a 19-inch rear screen, a perfume atomiser and WLAN.

The standard cars get new-look 21-spoke, 19-inch wheels, while the S models get 12-spoke, 20-inch wheels. Maybach says the new-look car is more aerodynamic, reducing interior wind noise.

Press Release

At Auto China 2010 in Beijing, Maybach will be presenting its high-end luxury sedans with added sparkle and with significantly extended high-class equipment and individualisation options. A large new chrome radiator grille confidently emphasises the legendary sedans’ exceptional status. Other new highlights include the hood with a shaped edge, the trim on the front bumper with daytime driving lights featuring LED technology, high-quality, dark red tail lights and a new, exclusively developed paint and stylish wheels. In future those purchasing a Maybach 57 and 57 S will also be able to opt for the rear reclining seat from the Maybach 62 models. New items are available on request, among them seat piping which is hand-braided or refined with CRYSTALLIZEDTM Swarovski Elements, an exquisite flacon perfume atomiser and a WLAN router for wireless internet access. As an option, a 19-inch cinema screen and an overview camera for the rear passengers can be installed in the rear of the Maybach 62 and 62 S models. The output of the twelve-cylinder engine in the Maybach 57 S and 62 S has been increased to 463 kW (630 hp) but the pollutant emissions of all models have still been cut.

The facelifted versions of the Maybach sedans are even more self-confident and effortlessly superior, their charisma even more striking. The exceptional status they enjoy finds its main emphasis in the new dominant chrome radiator grille, which is meticulously produced in two different variants. In the Maybach 57 and 62 models it has 20 fine longitudinal bars, and in the Maybach 57 S and 62 S twelve solid double louvres and a “shadow strut” flag up the vehicle’s tremendous power. Both arrow-shaped radiator grilles are also higher and boast significantly greater dimensions than before, and they have been assigned a more upright position.

The designers have elevated the modified hood and given it sharply defined contours. It has a contoured edge and appears distinctly arrow-shaped. A restyled, horizontally structured bumper trim gives the Maybach sedans an even broader look. Daytime driving lights featuring LED technology and bordered with a chrome insert have been integrated into the outer air intakes.

The new exterior mirrors with optimised aerodynamics for less driving noise harmonise with the striking front, whilst their large surface means improved vision. Dark red tail lights and chrome trim used on the handle in the boot lid lend the end section a powerful, distinguished look. This in turn is underlined by new high-sheen 21-spoke 19-inch wheels in titanium silver for the Maybach 57 and 62 models. The Maybach 57 S and 62 S models will in future be shod as standard with new 12-spoke 20-inch wheels in noble sterling silver. All models are available in the new Bahamas Blue paint.

Interior – superb craftsmanship

The rear reclining seat which has only been available in the Maybach sedans with a long wheelbase up until now can, with immediate effect, also be installed on the front-passenger side in the rear of the Maybach 57 and 57 S models. At the same time Maybach has enhanced the craftsmanship of the seats for all models. The look of the seat upholstery layout has been refined and given additional piping. On request the piping can also be hand-braided or adorned with valuable CRYSTALLIZEDTM Swarovski Elements. In the upper part of the seat backrest a redesigned badge in 925 sterling silver with “MAYBACH MANUFAKTUR” lettering is an impressive indication of the great love of detail and serves as a reminder of the prestigious environment in which one is travelling.

Maybach cuts an equally fine figure when it comes to the range of individualisation options available for the luxury sedans, which has been significantly extended. For the very first time there is an extremely high-quality flacon perfume atomiser available on request, having been developed exclusively by Maybach. Up until now it was reserved only for the special Maybach Zeppelin model, limited to just 100 units. As an option a large, high-resolution cinema screen with a 19-inch diagonal can now be fitted to the centre of the partition in the Maybach 62 models, as an alternative to the 9.5-inch monitors in the rear available until now. If required Maybach will also fit the vehicles which have a partition – which, incidentally, can now also be personalised with motifs of the customer’s choosing – with an overview camera, via which the rear passengers are able to keep an eye on the traffic in front of them without being seen themselves – even with an opaque partition window.

Thanks to an innovative WLAN router it is even possible to enjoy wireless internet access during the journey. This state-of-the-art connection uses the fast transmission standards HSDPA, UMTS and GSM/EDGE. A new mobile phone hands-free system with Bluetooth functionality is also available in the rear. And a newly developed DVD player in the rear now also reads extended DVD formats.

As one would expect, the Maybach MANUFAKTUR showcases masterly handcraftsmanship with no compromises in the interior, where materials of the highest quality abound. There are three new interior appointments with different leather, carpet and headlining colours. New trim in selected dark brown bird’s-eye maple, which can be combined with brilliant porcelain piano lacquer in the Maybach 57 S and 62 S, underline the regal ambience. As an alternative, customers can now choose from carbon-fibre trim elements with a sporty touch in various different colours, such as silver and red.

More powerful yet fewer emissions

Even though the Maybach developers have increased the output of the Maybach 57 S and 62 S by 13 kW (18 hp) to 463 kW (630 hp), they were able to reduce the consumption figures (from 16.4 to 15.8 l/100 km) and the CO2 output (from 390 to 368 g/km CO2). The output of the 57 and 62 models remained unchanged, whilst consumption (15.0 as opposed to 15.9 l/100 km) and CO2 output (350 as opposed to 383 g/km) was also cut here. All the Maybach twelve-cylinder engines meet the EU5 standard/LEV2.

Video: Artist David LaChapelle Portrays Maybach

  • World premiere of David LaChapelle's photographs presented by Maybach during Art Basel Miami Beach, December 5th
  • Maybach is accelerating its commitment to contemporary art
  • Combining art and social commitment based on the patronage model of the Wilhelm and Karl Maybach Foundation
  • Maybach - partner of Fondation Beyeler from 2010

Miami/Stuttgart - The Maybach automobile brand is accelerating its commitment to contemporary art. The focus is to work with internationally renowned artists like David LaChapelle and major institutions within the art community, like the Fondation Beyeler in Basel, Switzerland.

The latest highlight of Maybach's artistic commitment is its collaboration with David LaChapelle, one of the world's most prominent photographers. His artistic portrayals of Maybach luxury cars entitled "Exposure of Luxury" and "Berlin Stories" celebrated their world premiere during Art Basel Miami Beach, where they were presented to Maybach guests and the press at an exclusive preview on Saturday, December 5.

This artistic work focuses on the Maybach Zeppelin limited special edition and its historic predecessor from the 1930s, the Maybach Zeppelin DS 8.

"After visiting the Maybach facility in Sindelfingen, I was inspired to create two iconic photographs which radiated the same seducing and dynamic appeal, as the Maybach itself," said David LaChapelle.

The renowned American photographer has chosen to collaborate with style icon Daphne Guinness to portray both vehicles in his signature fashion. With creative freedom entrusted to LaChapelle by Maybach, he created photos that whisk the observer to a world filled with luxurious extravagance that features LaChapelle's celebrated surreal tableaux.

New view of the Maybach

The inspiration for this project was also characteristic of David LaChapelle. During a visit to the Maybach Centre of Excellence in Sindelfingen, Germany earlier this year, he was so impressed by the high-end sedans that he came up with an idea for a photo shooting, which he then completed in October.

Patrick Marinoff, Global Brand Manager Maybach, supported the concept of LaChapelle's interpretation from the very start.

"We are very honoured that such an exceptional artist like David LaChapelle, with his unusual and at times even rousing style, has interpreted the Maybach brand. The results speak for themselves; these are images that create a new view of the Maybach brand. I am convinced that the founder of the brand, Wilhelm Maybach - himself a great innovator in his time - would have also been delighted."

The artist created two motifs - one of the current Maybach Zeppelin and another of the Zeppelin from the 1930s photographed against a similarly themed backdrop. These photographs will become part of David LaChapelle's art collection, which will make their way to galleries, collectors and museums around the world. Later on a copy of each photo will go to the Daimler Art Collection.

With over 1,800 works by some 600 artists - including stars such as Andy Warhol and Jeff Koons - this has grown since 1977 to become one of the leading corporate collections of abstract-constructivist, conceptualist and minimalist art of the 20th century (visit http://www.collection.daimler.com for more information about the Daimler art collection).

Linking art and social commitment

With this project David LaChapelle follows in the footsteps of Andy Warhol, who created a 35-part series for Daimler back in 1986 entitled "Cars" according to the theme "the car - an icon of mobility". An outstanding feature of this was his artistic interpretation of the legendary gull-wing Mercedes-Benz 300 SL sports car. It was in fact Andy Warhol who noticed David LaChapelle's talent early in his career and provided him the opportunity to showcase his photography in Interview Magazine.

The Wilhelm and Karl Maybach Foundation is also dedicated to this principle of supporting young and emerging artists through established mentors. In following in the same path, David LaChapelle is supporting the idea of patronage by providing the opportunity for an emerging photographer to share his experiences with him for a three-month period in Hawaii - supported by Maybach.

This brings us full circle: Over a hundred years ago, Gottlieb Daimler met Wilhelm Maybach in the engineering works of an orphanage in Reutlingen, Germany and decided to take the extraordinarily talented young engineer under his wing. Maybach went on to develop a wide range of groundbreaking technical innovations.

Cooperation between Maybach and Fondation Beyeler

From 2010 Maybach will be the official partner of the renowned Fondation Beyeler in Riehen near Basel, Switzerland.

"It's wonderful that Maybach is so committed to the arts. Their collaboration with artists and art museums opens the doors to creativity and promotes culture excellence. Both - art and Maybach - unite the ideals of permanent innovation, consciousness of tradition and a highly developed sense of aesthetics and quality. Thanks to its cooperation with Maybach, the Fondation Beyeler is able to chauffeur its artists and international guests in a saloon that treats them to a motoring experience of unparalleled comfort," said Sam Keller, director Fondation Beyeler.

A tradition of commitment to top-notch contemporary art

In 2005 Maybach supported the artist duo Christo and Jeanne-Claude with their sensational project "The Gates" in New York's Central Park. After additional projects, in August 2009 this was followed by the presentation of the Maybach Art Cars - designed by Tim Berresheim.

Thanks to the collaboration with David LaChapelle and the partnership with the Fondation Beyeler, the luxury carmaker is consistently strengthening its commitment to contemporary art and offering customers exclusive access to the art, artists and prestigious art fairs, the brand and the limousines. This mirrors precisely what Wilhelm Maybach had in mind when he created his legendary car: luxurious, fascinating and ahead of its time.

Video & Photos Maybach Elegant drifting

Despite weight over 2,800 kg (6,184 lbs), being rear wheel drive and having a 550hp V12 under the bonnet producing 900 Nm (663 lbs/ft) of torque, it's still easy to imagine the difficulty in drifting a Maybach 62 around a curve. However, the chaps at iMotor have taken the challenge, of course with the help of a skilled driver, a nice new tux and a wet slick track. The only thing missing from the video is a sip of bubbly while drifting through the turn.

Maybach Landaulet Green-Lighted for Production

In a move that won't surprise many people, Maybach has approved the outrageous Landaulet open-top sedan for production. The 62 S-based Landaulet design study was first shown in November of last year, and its open passenger cabin coupled to a closed chauffeur's area harkened to the classic luxury era from which the brand takes its name. Favorable reaction to the Landaulet at auto shows led to its being put into production.

Like the show car, the hand-built Landaulet will be based on the Maybach 62 S. The fifth Maybach model line's obvious distinction comes from the rear roof section, which has been replaced with a powered soft top and glass window. Two exterior colors are offered: Baltic Black or Nevada Silver. The 20-inch wheels can be polished or matched to the body color. Interior treatments are similarly limited, with three leather choices and two trim finishes. The Landaulet can also be had with custom paint and interior trim just like any Maybach. The Landaulet's passenger cabin is subtly upgraded, with a wind deflector and larger rear headrests that also reduce turbulence. The twin-turbo V12 also gets a slight horsepower boost, to 450.

Maybach has set Landaulet pricing at EUR 900,000 ($1.35 million US), and it's a limited production model, of course. The first Maybach Landaulets will be hand-built in autumn of 2008.

The world’s most exclusive open-top luxury saloon: The new Maybach Landaulet – majestic open-air experience with the ultimate in luxury and comfort
Stuttgart
,
Feb 22, 2008

Stuttgart– The tradition-laden Maybach luxury brand is adding a fifth model to its line-up. The new Maybach Landaulet resurrects the legend of the classic luxury landaulets, a feature of which is that only the chauffeur's area is closed. An extra-large folding roof opens up over the pampered rear-seat passengers when required, leaving no obstructions between them and the blue sky above. The Maybach Landaulet thus offers a majestic open-air experience currently unrivalled by any other automobile. Boasting a certain romantic quality and allowing its passengers the opportunity to savour a closeness to nature, this exceptional vehicle also features the ultimate in comfort and technological sophistication and as such sets the new standard for the world's most exclusive luxury vehicles.
In November 2007, Maybach revived the aura of the grand carriages of days gone by with its Landaulet study. The response from the public to this masterpiece was overwhelming, so much so that Maybach decided to offer the hand-built Landaulet based exclusively on the customer's own specifications. A limited number of vehicles will be built in the Manufaktur workshops in Sindelfingen over a restricted period. The finest materials are painstakingly handcrafted by select craftsmen to meet the customers' exacting requirements - just as the discerning Maybach clientele would expect. According to the latest Luxury Brand Status Index (LBSI), a survey of 531 U.S.millionaires recently voted Maybach the most prestigious luxury automobile brand.
Exclusive workplace for the chauffeur, exquisite luxury for passengers
The Maybach Landaulet is a masterpiece of automotive engineering and comes with its very own exciting yet distinguished, authentic style. While the chauffeur's workplace is appointed with high-grade, smooth black leather and trim elements in glossy piano lacquer, the passengers in the rear with its optional contrasting colour scheme enjoy their place in the sun. They travel on opulent reclining seats upholstered in exquisite Grand Nappa leather in an environment of utmost luxury and exquisite style.
Large folding roof for a close-to experience of nature
In technical terms the Maybach Landaulet is based on the Maybach 62 S – which can claim to be the world's most powerful series-produced chauffeured saloon. Maybach technicians have removed the rear roof module in order to afford passengers an unobstructed view of the sky above. The side walls have been invisibly reinforced with an integral tubular steel structure. As these measures have not altered the silhouette of the luxury saloon, the generously dimensioned doors and the complete interior with reclining seats remain unchanged.
When closed, the black soft-top of the Landaulet rests on the roof frame formed by the longitudinal roof arches and is wind- and weather-proof. When requested by the passengers, the chauffeur operates a switch in the centre console. Fully automatically, the electro-hydraulic system then opens the roof, thetop is folded and gently laid onto the parcel shelf in the rear, together with its integral rear windscreen made of safety glass.
The chauffeur is able to enclose the folded roof with a fine leather tonneau cover, which both conceals the roof mechanism from view and completes the overall picture of outstanding elegance. The tonneau cover comes in the same colour as the interior of the rear compartment, thereby ensuring consistent styling and creating a harmonious link with the exterior. A logo reading "Maybach Landaulet" in the colour specified by the customer is embroidered onto the cover, where it is visible to following traffic.
Designed specifically for open-top motoring
Maybach has adapted the luxurious rear compartment to the requirements of open-top motoring. For instance, the rear head restraints are slightly larger than on the saloon and effectively help reduce wind turbulence. Another slim wind deflector is automatically raised at speeds above 70 km/h to further reduce the risk of any uncomfortable draughts. The deflector, which measures around five centimetres, can be activated manually at any time. The switch is conveniently positioned for rear passengers in the centre console.
The intercom in the passenger compartment is fitted with an additional handset in the centre console, allowing passengers to communicate with the driver at any time while the roof is down.
Appointments to satisfy every desire
The new Maybach Landaulet is painted in Baltic Black or Nevada Silver in a sophisticated process that ensures the highest standards of quality. Clients can choose from three leather appointment options, and a choice of two trim element finishes – black piano lacquer combined with either carbon-fibre trim or fine anthracite poplar.
As testimony to its exceptional customer focus, Maybach also meets many customer special requirements at no extra charge. For instance, Landaulet clients can choose the individual appointments for their vehicle from the entire Maybach paint finish, leather and trim element range. An extra charge only applies to highly exclusive requirements such as special paint finishes based on the customer's own specifications, select leather colours, trim elements in natural stone or the electro-transparent partition.
Visual highlights are provided by 20-inch aluminium wheels, also available as an option painted in the vehicle colour or burnished to a high sheen in a special finishing process.
Engine and suspension
The Maybach Landaulet is powered by an uprated V12 engine, developed for the Maybach 57 S and the Maybach 62 S. Thanks to twin turbochargers, the V12 engine develops 450 kW/612 hp from a displacement of 5980 cubic centimetres. Equipped with the AIRMATIC DC (Dual Control) electronically controlled air suspension system and the Adaptive Damping System (ADS II) the Landaulet model achieves an outstanding level of ride comfort whilst at the same time proving that even a prestigious automobile can display excellent agility and handling qualities.
First deliveries in autumn 2008
The Maybach Landaulet will cost EUR 900,000 (or US$ 1.35 million). The first customer vehicles are due to leave Maybach Manufaktur in autumn 2008.

Maybach Landaulet Makes World Debut at Dubai Motor Show

Unfortunately the WCF team were unable to make the journey over to Dubai to see the new Maybach Landaulet in the flesh for the first time, however loyal WCF reader "Vinay" was fortunately enough to be there and has duely sent us some liveshots of the event.

The Landaulet is a one off concept but we are sure there will be no shortage of takers demanding at least a limited production run.

Maybach 62 Facelift Spied

Just a few days ago, we showed spy photos of a next generation Maybach 62 test mule sporting the extended body of an S-Class. And now our spy snappers have spotted a Maybach 62 wearing a mismatched pair of tail lamps on the streets on Munich. Looking more closely, evidence emerges of a very minor facelift. At the rear of the car we can see that the left side tailamp is normal with its lower reflector extending below the boot lid across the rear body panel. However, on the right side this reflector is either filled with a normal painted panel containing a smaller LED light strip just below the main tail lamp lens housing or a thin black plastic moulding simply sits on top of the reflector underneath. Also, the front grille has fewer vertical slats and these wheels appear to be new as well.

Maybach Landaulet

This Landaulet concept gets an uprated V12 engine, co-designed by AMG. The 6.0 litre machine cranks out 612 horsepower, and 738 ft-lb of torque from 2000 to 4000 rpm and from 4800 to 5100 rpm. With twin turbochargers and water intercooling, this engine is a step up from the V12 found in the 62 S - the most powerful production limo.
